Somebody’s Child Embraces Change with 'Time Of My Life'

Dublin-based indie rock outfit Somebody’s Child is back with a bang, offering up a nostalgic yet refreshingly mature new single, “Time Of My Life.” This reflective track, part of their forthcoming sophomore album, When Youth Fades Away, marks a bold new direction for the band, fronted by Cian Godfrey. Since their self-titled debut in 2023, Somebody’s Child has captured widespread attention, thrilling audiences with a sold-out headlining show at London’s Heaven and a memorable main-stage performance at Ireland’s Electric Picnic. The success has only fueled their ambition, as they gear up to release what may be their most introspective work yet through Frenchkiss Records on March 28, 2025.

Produced by Grammy-winning Peter Katis, known for his work with The National and Interpol, When Youth Fades Away, brings a seasoned edge to Somebody’s Child's sound, adding layers of depth both musically and lyrically. Godfrey’s comments suggest that this album is a shift from the escapism of their debut toward a more grounded exploration of life’s inevitable transitions. “If our first album was about running away, this one is about staying put and reflecting,” he explains, delving into themes of ageing, acceptance, and the passage of time. The album promises to resonate with listeners who find themselves reflecting on the past with fresh eyes and a sense of hard-earned wisdom.

The single “Time Of My Life” embodies this new era with its minimalist two-chord structure and lyrical candor. Written in the last stages of recording, the song captures a fleeting moment of clarity and resolve. Godfrey describes it as a "cathartic" experience, a song that flowed out of the band in under an hour when they were close to calling it quits for the day. “It’s about the flashing of life before your eyes, ending in a feeling of resolve, leaving legacy through songs and accepting fate,” he shares. This raw approach, paired with the band's familiar indie rock sound, highlights the emotional honesty that sets this album apart from their previous work.

Beyond the lead single, When Youth Fades Away, sees Somebody’s Child pushing sonic boundaries, experimenting with a mix of electronic and acoustic elements. Tracks like the synth-heavy title track reflect the band’s inspiration from electronic pioneers like Kraftwerk, while the introspective “Irish Goodbye” offers a more stripped-back moment of vulnerability. With additional keyboard work by Thomas Bartlett of The Gloaming, the album promises a dynamic blend of influences, positioning Somebody’s Child as a band willing to explore new creative territories.

As Somebody’s Child prepares for this next chapter, they’re solidifying their place within modern rock. When Youth Fades Away, is not just a testament to their growth, but a declaration that they’re here for the long haul, ready to make a lasting mark. With “Time Of My Life” as the opening anthem of this new era, the band invites listeners to pause, reflect, and ultimately embrace the beauty in life’s impermanence. It’s a promising step forward for a band that shows no signs of slowing down.
